Wicker Is 2026’s Strangest Film: Olivia Colman Buys a Husband Made of Baskets

FilmWicker Is 2026’s Strangest Film: Olivia Colman Buys a Husband Made of Baskets

Amid a 2026 packed with blockbusters and epics — from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey to a Marvel revival in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the rom-com resurgence of One Night Only — one of the year’s strangest offerings has quietly emerged: Wicker.

Written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, the film follows a lonely fisherwoman, played by Olivia Colman, who pays a local basket weaver, played by Peter Dinklage, to craft her a husband out of wicker.

The resulting creation — a Frankenstein’s-monster-like figure played by Alexander Skarsgård — soon becomes the talk of the town, and the object of envy among the very village women who once mocked the fisherwoman.

The trailer leans hard into the fable’s surreal streak. The fisherwoman and her wicker husband consummate their marriage more than once, and one villager marvels that he is “strong as a tree and just as hard.”

The premise leaves plenty unanswered — not least the source of the basket maker’s apparent hold over the natural world — but Wicker has already positioned itself as one of 2026’s most unexpected cinematic curiosities.
