It is a tale as old as Hollywood: a beloved pop star conquers music, then sets sights on the movies. It gave us big-screen turns from Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Harry Styles — and now Billie Eilish is officially joining their ranks.

Eilish was recently photographed in Toronto on the set of Sarah Polley’s upcoming adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s iconic 1963 novel The Bell Jar, in which she stars as protagonist Esther Greenwood.

The images show a completely transformed Eilish: midcentury clothing and chestnut-brown hair, a cherry-red sweater top with a red-and-gray checkered A-line skirt, pearl stud earrings, a bright red lip, and hair coiffed to ’50s perfection.

The costumes may be eye candy, but The Bell Jar is anything but lighthearted — Plath’s semi-autobiographical story follows Esther’s unraveling and remains one of literature’s most searching portraits of mental illness, raising the stakes for Eilish’s first leading screen role.
