Maleah Joi Moon stars in the Netflix revival of “A Different World,” which premiered Thursday and updates the sitcom that ran on NBC from 1987 to 1993. Moon, 23, plays Deborah, the daughter of Whitley and Dwayne Wayne, the couple at the heart of the original series set at the fictional historically Black college Hillman. The revival hands a new generation of students the campus that made the show a cultural landmark.

Original cast members return to ground the new version, with Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy reprising Dwayne and Whitley. Moon said her character carries traits from both parents. “She definitely has her father’s earnest nature and her mom’s flair for the spotlight,” she said. She described Dwayne Wayne, her on-screen father, as “the well-loved Black man” whose legacy shapes how Deborah moves through Hillman.

Moon comes to the role after a fast rise on the New York stage. She won the Tony Award for best leading actress in a musical for “Hell’s Kitchen,” the Alicia Keys show, a breakthrough that arrived for a performer still in her early twenties. The revival marks a move into television for someone who had made her name in front of a live theater audience, and it places her at the front of the new cast.

The original “A Different World” grew out of “The Cosby Show” and became known for episodes that addressed campus life at a historically Black college, from money and relationships to activism. It also launched the careers of several performers during its six-season run. Its revival arrives amid a wider wave of nostalgia-driven reboots, and it leans on the goodwill built by a series that shaped how a generation pictured Black college life.

By casting Moon as the child of its most famous couple, the show ties its new episodes directly to the original run while handing the story to a younger lead. She framed the part as an inheritance rather than a reset. “Your life is what you make it,” she said of the choices facing her character. The revival now tests whether Hillman can hold a new audience decades after the first class graduated.
