Grimes Unveils Psyopera, Her First Album in Six Years, With Single Accelerando

MusicGrimes Unveils Psyopera, Her First Album in Six Years, With Single Accelerando

Grimes has announced Psyopera, her first album since Miss Anthropocene in 2020, and released a dark, rave-leaning single called Accelerando. The song was made with the producer VADAKIN. No release date has been given for the album, which will be the first to come out on her own label, Nazgul Recording LLC.

The announcement arrived through a cryptic video posted on social media, filled with surreal imagery and references to God, the Garden of Eden and artificial intelligence. AI sits at the centre of the new record’s themes, although Grimes has said she did not use generative AI tools to write or produce the songs themselves. The clip offered few concrete details about the music, leaving Accelerando as the main indication of how the album will sound.

She has also made clear that the album steers away from her personal life with Elon Musk, the father of her three children. Speaking on the Swiftologist podcast, she said she “didn’t want any of this to be about Elon”. She hinted that the project could eventually be split in two, with a second part that would be entirely personal, though she gave no timetable for that. The comments set the record apart from much of the attention she has received in recent years, which has often focused on her relationship with the billionaire rather than her music.

The release follows several years in which Grimes has been more visible for her views on technology than for new music. She previously made more than 200 AI-generated versions of her voice and songs available for other creators to use, and she appeared at Coachella in 2026. Her output since Miss Anthropocene has been scattered across standalone singles, including Artificial Angels, rather than a full album. She has also drawn attention for a new face tattoo. Those projects kept her in discussions about the place of technology in music even without a full-length release.

Accelerando gives fans a first sense of where Psyopera is heading, with a dark sound built for the dancefloor. With the label now under her own control, Grimes will decide how and when the rest of the album reaches listeners. Further details on the tracklist, collaborators and any live plans are expected closer to release, and the possibility of a second, more personal instalment remains open.
