Production has wrapped on “A Legacy of Spies,” an espionage drama starring Matthew Macfadyen and Charlie Hunnam, the project confirmed Sept. 29. The series is a co-production between the BBC and MGM+, and it draws on the Cold War fiction of John le Carre. Filming took place primarily in the Czech Republic, with additional work in the United Kingdom and Germany, giving the shoot the shifting European backdrop that le Carre’s stories often demand.
Macfadyen plays George Smiley, le Carre’s veteran intelligence officer, who directs events from behind the scenes. Hunnam plays Alec Leamas, a seasoned field operative sent into East Germany. The story is rooted in “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold,” le Carre’s early novel, and follows the mission and the fallout that trails its agents for years afterward. Smiley, a character adapted many times for the screen, again serves as the story’s quiet fixed point.
The official synopsis lays out the central operation. “When Alec Leamas, a highly experienced Circus field operative, recruits Doris Quinz, a young and dynamic East German woman, to smuggle high-value Stasi documents into the West, it sets in motion a series of events that threaten to explode in the crucible of Cold War Berlin,” it reads. The plot moves between Berlin and the operatives caught on both sides of the divide.
The cast is a deep bench of British and European talent. Daniel Bruhl, Dan Stevens, Joe Alwyn and Hugh Laurie all feature, alongside Felix Kammerer and Agnes O’Casey. The ensemble reflects the international scope of le Carre’s work, which has drawn steady interest from producers adapting his novels for film and television over the past six decades.
No premiere date has been announced for the series. The end of filming clears the way for post-production ahead of a release on the BBC and MGM+. Le Carre, who died in 2020, remains one of the most adapted authors in the spy genre, and “A Legacy of Spies” continues a long line of screen versions of his Circus novels. The wrap marks the completion of a shoot that spanned three countries.
