Gary “Angry” Anderson, the gravel-voiced frontman of the Australian hard rock band Rose Tattoo, died on Sept. 21, 2026. He was 79. Anderson had suffered a heart attack in late August, and he died surrounded by family in Australia, according to a statement from the band. His death came weeks after Rose Tattoo cut short a European farewell tour.
Anderson fronted Rose Tattoo from the group’s formation in Sydney in 1976, leading a blues-based hard rock sound built on slide guitar and bar-room swagger. The band shaped a generation of rock and metal acts, and Guns N’ Roses covered its song “Nice Boys” on a 1986 live release, an endorsement that widened the group’s audience overseas. Rose Tattoo found a devoted following in Europe and Australia, even as mainstream chart success in the United States proved harder to reach.
Beyond the band, Anderson reached a wider audience with the 1987 solo ballad “Suddenly,” which became a hit after it was used in a wedding episode of the Australian soap opera “Neighbours.” He also appeared as the villain Ironbar in the 1985 film “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” a role that extended his profile beyond music and introduced him to filmgoers who did not know his records.
Rose Tattoo had been touring Europe on a run billed as “One Last Ride” before canceling its remaining dates in August. The band played its final concert on Aug. 7 in Cologne, Germany. Anderson had continued performing into his late 70s despite health problems that had interrupted his schedule in recent years, and he remained the band’s public face throughout its later lineups.
Tributes followed from across the rock world. Sebastian Bach, the former Skid Row singer, wrote that “you’re not gonna see the likes of Angry anymore,” adding, “You left us too soon but that’s because you was too good for us.” He called Anderson “the James Brown of heavy metal rock ‘n’ roll.” Rose Tattoo described him as “a devoted father, and much-loved member of his friends, bandmates and the wider music and entertainment community.” Anderson was also known in Australia for charity work and public advocacy over the decades.
