John D. MacDonald’s merciless novel The Executioners has anchored every screen version of this story, and its psychopath, Max Cady, radiates terror no matter who plays him. Robert Mitchum defined the role in 1962, Robert De Niro supercharged it in 1991, and now Javier Bardem takes it on in a 10-episode limited series for Apple TV.
Every version keeps the novel’s spine: a convict released from prison torments the family of the lawyer he blames for his conviction. The new series reworks the setup — Bardem’s Cady is indicted not for rape but for the murder of his pregnant wife.
This time the guilty verdict feels shaky, undercut by lies surfacing from the past — Cady’s and those of Anna Bowden, the lawyer who represented him 17 years earlier, played by Amy Adams. The most damning detail: soon after pushing Cady toward a brutal plea deal, Anna married Tom, the prosecutor who put him away, played by Patrick Wilson.
Across its ten episodes the show juggles a sprawl of plot, but it keeps circling one contemporary anxiety: a culture of misinformation, in which the truth is whatever survives the retelling.
The finale, titled “The Executioners,” staged a final, violent trial in the Bowdens’ kitchen — with Cady cast as judge, jury and executioner, and the family as defendants — bringing the melodrama to its brutal close.
