Harry Styles Uses Madison Square Garden Residency to Honour ICE Shooting Victim

NewsHarry Styles Uses Madison Square Garden Residency to Honour ICE Shooting Victim

Harry Styles paused his Madison Square Garden residency to pay tribute to Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old man shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in New York. Belgal was shot in his car on 8 October while his five-year-old son was in the back seat. He survived and is being held at a detention facility. The shooting took place in New York, the city where Styles is midway through a run of concerts at the arena.

Speaking from the stage, Styles asked the crowd to keep Belgal in their thoughts and to “remember to just look after each other”. He urged fans to shape their cities into the places they want to live in, including for their children, and to show respect, love and a sense of justice towards people who look different or come from elsewhere. The Department of Homeland Security has defended the agents, saying they were trying to arrest a man with an alleged criminal history and knew the child was in the car.

The 30-night residency started at the end of August and runs until a Harryween show on 31 October. Earlier nights have included a tribute to Dolly Parton and a joke about Taylor Swift’s wedding, which was held at the same venue. The New York stand is part of the Together, Together Tour, which has also included a record 12 shows at Wembley Stadium in London and dates in Amsterdam, São Paulo and Mexico City. Thirty nights at a single arena makes it one of the biggest stretches of the whole tour.

Concerts in Melbourne and Sydney are scheduled for December. Last month Styles announced the final cities of the tour, all of them in 2027, with Kylie Minogue and LCD Soundsystem among the support acts. Those dates sit within Green Nation, Live Nation’s sustainability programme, which aims to cut emissions and encourage lower-impact travel to shows.

Styles will support the charity Choose Love at every 2027 date, marking ten years of the partnership, while proceeds from US shows will go to HeadCount, which uses music to register voters. The tour supports his fourth solo album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, released in March. NME gave the Amsterdam show five stars, describing it as a hopeful celebration of community. The remarks added a political note to a residency that has otherwise been built around celebration.
