Princess Eugenie has welcomed a daughter, a first for the royal family in more ways than one. The baby was born on 3 August at 6.20pm in Lisbon, weighing six pounds nine ounces, and is the first child of Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank to be born in Portugal. She is also, by most accounts, the first member of the House of Windsor ever to be born in the country, a small but genuine piece of royal history.
The new arrival takes her place 15th in line to the British throne, slotting in behind her two older brothers and nudging others one step further down the order. Among those affected are the Duke of Edinburgh, King Charles’s youngest brother, and the Princess Royal, both of whom move down a place with the birth. It is a reminder of how the line of succession quietly reshuffles with each new generation, sending senior royals gradually further from a throne they were once much closer to.
Eugenie and Brooksbank, who married at Windsor in 2018, are already parents to two sons, August, who is five, and Ernest, who is three. Both boys carry names with a distinctly Victorian flavour, echoes of Prince Albert’s family, and there was early speculation that the couple might continue the theme, or reach instead for a name honouring the late Queen. The family had not confirmed the baby’s name at the time of the announcement.
The choice of Lisbon as a birthplace reflects the life Eugenie and Brooksbank have increasingly built away from the centre of royal duty. As a granddaughter of the late Queen who has never been a working royal, Eugenie has more freedom than most in the family to live where she pleases, and Portugal has become a base for the couple. That a Windsor baby should arrive there rather than in a London hospital is a sign of how much the extended royal family has spread out in recent years.
For all the talk of succession numbers, the significance of a 15th-in-line birth is largely symbolic. The baby is unlikely ever to come close to the throne, and her life will almost certainly be a private one. What the arrival does mark is another branch of the family quietly growing, on its own terms and, in this case, on foreign soil. For Eugenie, who has spoken warmly about motherhood before, the headline is a simpler one: a daughter to join her two sons.
