Streaming arrived promising to simplify how we watch, offering everything in one place at the touch of a button. Years on, the reality is considerably more complicated, and it is worth being honest about the gap between the promise and what audiences actually got. Convenience, it turns out, was not quite the whole story.
The fragmentation is the most obvious problem. What began as a single alternative to traditional television has splintered into a crowded field of competing services, each with its own subscription and its own exclusive content, until keeping up with it all rivals the complexity streaming was meant to escape. The simplicity has quietly disappeared.
The abundance brings its own difficulties. With more content available than anyone could watch, the challenge has shifted from access to discovery, and the task of finding something worth watching amid the endless options has become a genuine burden. More has not straightforwardly meant better.
None of this is to dismiss what streaming achieved. It transformed the industry and gave audiences genuine benefits. But the honest assessment is that it solved some problems while creating others, and the frictionless future it promised has not quite arrived. As the model matures, the hope must be that it grows simpler again, and remembers the convenience that was its original appeal.
