When Netflix quietly acquired and released The Hunting Wives last summer, few anticipated that the soapy satire about a clique of gun-toting East Texan housewives would become the cultural phenomenon it did. Adapted by Hightown creator Rebecca Cutter from May Cobb’s 2021 novel of the same name, the series now returns for a second season, with a first look confirming a bigger, more dangerous chapter ahead.
The show centers on Sophie O’Neil, played by Brittany Snow, a liberal newcomer to the fictional small town of Maple Brook whose marriage and family life are upended by a whirlwind affair with the seductive socialite Margo Banks, played by Malin Akerman, the wife of a soon-to-be gubernatorial candidate. Long confined to a gilded cage, Sophie finds her buried desires reawakened, and the fallout drives the drama.
Season 2 is set to return on November 26. Produced by Lionsgate Television and premiering globally as a Netflix original, the new eight-episode run transforms the lovers’ dynamic into a partnership forged in mutually assured destruction, even as their genuine affection for each other, in the show’s telling, somehow makes the relationship healthier than before.
“What’s really interesting to me about those two characters is that Margo’s very transparent and really owns that she can be a bad person,” Cutter says of the pairing. “Sophie came into season 1 really viewing herself as a good person and undergoes the evolution to becoming a murderer at the end of season 1. Season 2 really explores the ways in which they’re the same.”
That framing follows directly from the first season’s climax. By the finale, Sophie discovers that Margo killed a local teenager, Abby Jackson, played by Madison Wolfe, using Sophie’s gun, a revelation that binds the two women together in guilt as much as desire. The new season, the first look suggests, leans into that entanglement rather than resolving it.
The result is a series doubling down on the elements that made it a surprise hit: heightened melodrama, small-town power games and a central relationship in which affection and leverage are impossible to separate. With the return date set and the episode count confirmed, the sophomore run positions The Hunting Wives to build on an audience that found it almost entirely by word of mouth.
