Municipalities that allow new nuclear power should be rewarded for it, the Liberals propose, in a bid to smooth the path for Sweden’s planned expansion of reactor capacity. “We want nuclear power municipalities to become rich municipalities,” said Minister of Climate and Environment Romina Pourmokhtari.
The pledge mirrors an existing arrangement for wind power, under which municipalities that give their approval receive money from the state. The aim, Pourmokhtari said, is for communities to feel a tangible local benefit: “You should notice it locally where nuclear power is produced.”
Beyond direct rewards, the Liberals want the state to guarantee municipalities’ costs for the construction of new reactors, including the surrounding infrastructure. The proposal is designed to reassure local governments that hosting a major energy project will not leave them exposed to unpredictable expenses.
A third element addresses a challenge that has become central to the country’s nuclear ambitions: the need for skilled workers. The party wants to build regional hubs in the nuclear power regions, developed in collaboration with vocational schools, universities and other actors, to train the workforce that new plants would require.
Taken together, the measures form part of a broader push to accelerate nuclear construction in Sweden. By pairing financial incentives with cost guarantees and workforce planning, the Liberals are seeking to turn political support for nuclear power into concrete projects on the ground, where local approval has often been the decisive hurdle.
