Ever been curious about how your favorite Crime Fiction streaming series stars were created? Or interested in knowing more about the authors who invented them, what they were thinking for instance when naming a popular character like Alex Cross, Dexter, Scarpetta, Vera, Line of Duty’s Ted Hastings, Happy Valley’s Sergeant Catherine Cawood, Myron Bolitar, Detective Harry Hole, Dick Tracy, Rusty Sabich, V.I. Warshawski, Stephanie Plum, Inspector Rubus, Lincoln Rhyme, Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan, Cork O’Connor, Night Agent Peter Sutherland, Finlay Donovan, John Rambo, Longmire, and many more of our favorite crime-fiction protagonists like L.A.P.D. Detective Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch?
Michael Connelly shared the answer to that question exclusively with TUBI-streaming show ABOUT THE AUTHORS TV, during his episode as part of the forthcoming CRIME FICTION Edition, recalling that “where I first engaged in Bosch, the painter, was in college in a humanities class. And again, it was one of those lucky things that the professor was just fascinated with the painter’s work and the sometimes- discernible meanings behind what he was doing. So I was steeped in Hieronymus Bosch. I think there are obvious corollaries between Bosch’s most famous work and living in Los Angeles, so I was going for this metaphor of a modern Garden of Earthly Delights, because within those paintings there’s the good and the bad. And I was seeing that as a reporter covering crime out here.”
When conjuring up her devious Housemaid star Millie Calloway, Freida McFadden reveals she was pulling from autobiographical muse in her episode, sharing that “with Millie, I sort of like[d] the idea of an employee being treated poorly because I’ve kind of been in that situation before—not recently, but years ago. I also like situations that are very cringey because somebody is sort of being treated so badly.”

In fact, that’s why Morgan Freeman took the role, because Alex doesn’t. I mean, he can if need be, he can. He can fight, but he’s not. He’s not a fighter. That’s not his nature. And his nature is to solve things with his head, and that was what attracted Morgan to the role.”

Covering every corner of the globe, Tana French talks about dialoguing with Dublin Murder Squad DI Rob Ryan: I never based characters on real people who I’ve known. He consistently feels a little bit like the outsider, because he is carrying this mystery inside himself and the secret about himself in the sense that he is in some ways set apart from people who haven’t been through this traumatic event. When I’m writing in his character on the page, it’s more the rhythms of his voice that I could hear, and the kind of the inner rhythm of his thinking, the sort of nervy, edgy, highly controlled inner rhythm that he’s got that’s not always perfectly controlled, because, you know, this is a guy who has been cracked straight through at a formative age and that cracks still there, but it’s very well concealed.
ATA TV Host/Creator Jake Brown (also an author of 60 books) commented: “As we enter our 6th year, we couldn’t be more excited to be delivering our most ambitious seasons yet with a focus definitively on Crime Fiction’s amazing world of scribes. Whether you’re a fan of Alex Cross, Bosch, The Housemaid Series, or older school classic characters like V.I. Warshwski, Dr. Temprence Brennan, Stephanie Plum, Dexter, Vera Stanhope, Will Trent, John Rebus, Joe Pickett, Rusty Sabich, Dr. Kay Scarpetta, and so many more, we’re joined by over 150 writers who have shaped the Crime Fiction genre over the past 50 years and are equally-excited to feature today’s newest pens blazing away!”
