With Prince Harry and Meghan intending to move back to the United Kingdom, and settling into a non-royal home rather than resuming official duties, attention has turned to the many occasions when the Royal Family gathers informally. These are not part of the official working diary, but they routinely bring the family together in large numbers, and a base in Britain would make them far easier for the Sussexes to attend.
Christmas Day at Sandringham is perhaps the most prominent of them. The walk to church in Norfolk, followed by the family’s private festivities, produces one of the most photographed royal moments of the year, and it requires no working-royal status to join. Wherever the Sussexes were to settle, the Norfolk estate would be within reach for the occasion.
Easter offers another gathering. The King keeps his Easter Court at Windsor, and the family is often seen walking the steep slope from the castle to St George’s Chapel for the Easter Sunday service, an unofficial moment that has regularly included non-working royals and lends itself to a family photo opportunity.
Sport provides several more. Royal Ascot, made royal each year by the King and Queen, is famous for its daily carriage procession, while the royal box at Wimbledon hosts many well-known faces across the fortnight without requiring an official royal role. Princess Beatrice has enjoyed matches there in past years, and the King’s Kent cousins, including Prince Michael of Kent with his children Frederick and Gabriella, are frequent attendees.
The Cheltenham Festival in March is another draw. A celebration of horse racing, it often attracts Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and many members of the wider family without official roles, including regulars such as Princess Eugenie. Attendance is a personal decision rather than an official engagement, and royal cousins are frequently seen coming together there.
Taken as a calendar, these occasions show how much of royal life happens outside the formal diary. For a couple stepping back from official duties but remaining connected to the family, such gatherings offer a way to be seen alongside the King, the Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales, keeping a hint of royalty in view even from the position of private citizens.
