This year’s fall/winter bag trends bring things back to the basics, with a few surprises along the way. A review of the fall collections, guided by retail experts, points to a lineup that feels timeless yet contemporary: ladylike top-handles, totes in luxe croc-embossed finishes, and flap bags that lend everyday wardrobes a touch of elegance.
“While there’s still appetite for trend-forward pieces, customers are investing in bags that have a distinct point of view, whether that’s through texture, shape, or craftsmanship,” says Caroline Maguire, senior fashion director of Shopbop. Nostalgia is running high alongside that appetite, with early-aughts styles from Chloe’s Paddington to Saint Laurent’s Mombasa proving their distinctive shapes still feel fresh two decades later.
The retro top-handle leads the season, updated through rich colors, interesting hardware and textures such as croc embossing, and seen at Prada, Miu Miu and Hermes. Novelty party bags are being reimagined as small day styles that double for evening, taking cues from the runway with pieces like Valentino’s DeVain and the Fendi Baguette.
Softer, less structured shapes offer a counterpoint to the season’s more architectural silhouettes, among them the Chanel Maxi Flap, Balenciaga’s soft Rodeo and the Saint Laurent Maxi Suede Flap, with similar looks spotted at Bottega Veneta and Ferragamo. The It-bag revival runs in parallel, returning beloved styles like the Chloe Paddington, the Fendi Baguette and the Saint Laurent Mombasa to the spotlight, along with Balenciaga’s City and Mulberry’s Alexa, both recently carried by figures such as Charli XCX and Dakota Fanning.
The flap bag, seen everywhere from Tory Burch to Gucci to Chanel, is proving its versatility well beyond its traditional associations. Croc-embossed textures with rich, burnished finishes emerge as one of the biggest stories, reading as polished rather than bold and appearing at Prada, Gucci and Chanel, from work-ready totes to evening clutches. Rounding out the season are oversize totes, positioned as the ultimate mix of fashion and function for anyone carrying a laptop, gym kit and everything in between.
“Animal textures, especially croc embossing with rich burnished finishes, are one of the biggest stories,” Maguire adds. “They feel polished rather than bold, making them an easy way to add interest to even the most minimal look.”
