Coco Gauff has captured her second Cincinnati Open title, defeating Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4 in the women’s final to arrive at the US Open in commanding form. Gauff dominated the match, racing to a 5-0 lead in the opening set and converting five of six break-point chances.
The victory carried echoes of 2023, when Gauff won in Cincinnati and went on to claim her first Grand Slam title at that year’s US Open. At just 22, she has already established herself as one of the defining players of her generation.
Her run in Cincinnati underlined both her consistency and her growing authority on hard courts, the surface on which she has enjoyed some of her greatest success. The timing, days before the season’s final major, boosted her standing among the favourites.
In the men’s final, Arthur Fils of France beat American Frances Tiafoe to claim his first Masters 1000 crown, in a match noted as the first time two Black players had contested an ATP Masters 1000 final, adding historic weight to the tournament.
For a sport that has increasingly celebrated its trailblazing women, Gauff’s triumph reinforced her role as a leading figure both on court and as a voice for a new generation of athletes.
