Carly Rae Jepsen Explains Split From Manager Scooter Braun

InterviewCarly Rae Jepsen Explains Split From Manager Scooter Braun

Carly Rae Jepsen has explained why she parted ways with manager Scooter Braun, describing the split as part of a search for the right team rather than a falling out. Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the singer said she had reached a point where she wanted a different kind of career, and she framed the change as a move toward greater creative freedom.

Jepsen said her experiences with managers had varied over the years. “I’ve had some good experiences with people, and I’ve had hard ones too. It’s taken a second to figure out the right team for my management, and now I’m happier than I’ve ever been,” she said. She presented the decision to leave as one made from a settled place rather than in conflict.

She said the parting came down to differing visions for her music. “I knew that I was on a different journey than he understood. I wanted to do something a little bit less mainstream, and I liked what he had offered, but I didn’t necessarily think it was what I wanted anymore,” she said. Jepsen added that she preferred a clean break, saying, “I felt like it was just going to be a little bit easier to shake hands, walk away and go let my freak flag fly, so to speak.”

The singer noted that the separation was not total, at least in terms of the people she worked with. “I took one of his employees with me,” she said, indicating that part of her existing team moved with her after the split. Her account described a transition that kept some continuity even as the top of her management structure changed.

Jepsen also reflected on how much control she had felt earlier in her career. “I wouldn’t say I had complete agency from the beginning, but not because they were trying to take it away. But I didn’t know how to take it,” she said. The comments framed her current situation as the product of a longer process of learning to steer her own decisions, which she tied to feeling more content with where her career stands now.
