Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan are releasing their first recorded collaboration. A remix of Rodrigo’s song expectations featuring Roan arrives on Thursday 15 October, and it is the first time Roan has appeared as a featured artist on another singer’s track. The two singers have long been linked through their music and their shared producer.
Interscope Records said the remix will go live at 8pm Eastern Time, which is 5pm on the US West Coast. A music video starring both singers will be released at the same time. The new version was produced by Daniel Nigro, a long-time collaborator of both artists, while the video was directed by Bardia Zeinali. Fans can also pre-order physical copies, including a limited-edition seven-inch vinyl, CDs and cassettes. The release of physical formats suggests the label expects strong demand from collectors.
The original expectations appears on Rodrigo’s album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which came out in June and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Turning an album track into a duet with one of the most in-demand singers of the moment gives the record a second life several months after release, and the announcement drew a strong reaction from both fan bases online. Remixes with guest artists are a common way for labels to extend the life of a successful album.
The pair have shared a stage before. In August, they performed together at Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival in Irvine, California, an event that raised $20 million for organisations supporting women and girls. Their history goes back further still. Roan opened for Rodrigo on selected dates of the GUTS World Tour in 2024, shortly before her own career took off. That shared history has made a recorded collaboration one of the most requested pairings among their fans.
The collaboration brings together two artists whose paths have crossed often, now on equal billing. For Roan, who has so far kept her name to her own releases, the remix marks a change of approach. For Rodrigo, it adds a high-profile guest to an album that has already reached the top of the chart. The video and remix will be available together from Thursday evening. Fans will be able to judge the result for themselves within days, once the song and video go live.
