Taylor Swift is not done with her showgirl. On Wednesday, Sept. 23, the singer told fans she would expand her chart-smashing album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ into a longer edition called ‘The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore,’ adding four fresh songs to a record that already rewrote the sales books. Pre-orders opened the same day, and the extended version arrived two days later on Friday, Sept. 25. For a project that had barely finished its victory lap, the refresh gave listeners a reason to line up again.

The four additions are titled ‘Patient Zero,’ ‘Cleveland!,’ ‘Pink Clouding’ and ‘Babylon.’ Swift explained that the songs came together almost by accident after she flew to Sweden to celebrate the album with its architects, producers Max Martin and Karl Schuster, who records as Shellback. “Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: we wrote more songs,” she wrote in a statement thanking fans for the response.

The response was staggering. ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ moved 4.002 million equivalent album units in its first week, which Luminate, the company that has tracked American sales since 1991, called the biggest first week in modern music history. Pure album sales came to 3,479,500 copies, and 2.7 million of those sold on the first day alone. The album blew past Adele’s ’25,’ which had held the modern record with 3.378 million units back in 2015.

Vinyl told its own story. Swift sold 1.2 million records on wax in a single week, topping the 859,000 she had logged with her previous album and setting a new high for the format in the streaming age. The release also pushed her to 15 No. 1 titles on the Billboard 200, the most ever for a solo artist and second only to the Beatles among all acts. It finished the year as the best-selling album on the planet.

Swift framed the extra songs as a thank-you rather than a marketing play, though the timing kept ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ in the conversation for weeks longer than a normal album cycle allows. The deluxe drop handed streaming services and vinyl plants another spike in demand just as the first wave began to cool. For an artist who has spent years teaching her audience to expect the unexpected, a four-song encore felt less like a bonus and more like the next verse of a story she is clearly enjoying telling.
