Boy George has cut ties with the head of his record label after a disagreement over an AI-generated song. The 65-year-old singer parted ways with Tony Pontius, who ran his BGP label, in a split that, according to Billboard, came down to a track the two men could not agree on.
The song at the centre of the row is an AI-generated reggae number titled “We Will Dance Again,” which references the 2023 Nova festival attack. Billboard reported that Pontius refused to have anything to do with the track, and that the disagreement led to the two going their separate ways.
The fallout did not stop at the label. Boy George also stepped away from a planned run as King Herod in the West End production of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” pulling out of the role amid the wider dispute.
The episode is a small but telling example of how divisive AI-made music has become, even among people who have spent their whole careers in the industry. A veteran artist and his own label boss falling out over a single computer-generated track says a lot about how unresolved the question still is.
