Tom Cruise Makes His Case for the Big Screen in GQ Cover Interview

InterviewTom Cruise Makes His Case for the Big Screen in GQ Cover Interview

Tom Cruise used his GQ cover interview to talk about his reputation for demanding a great deal on set and to defend the theatrical experience he has spent years promoting. He said he is direct with the people he works with about what he expects from them. “I work hard, and people that work with me, they know. I expect a lot and I’m upfront about it,” he said. He acknowledged the lore that has built up around his working methods, saying that when actors ask whether the stories about him are accurate, he tells them plainly that the rumors are true.

Cruise rejected the idea that his devotion to cinema amounts to hostility toward television or streaming platforms. He said he holds nothing against those formats, and he framed his focus on movies as being about people rather than any single distribution model. “I have nothing against cable or TV or Netflix,” he said, tying his choices to a belief in the connection audiences feel when they watch films together.

Asked about how he prepares for a project, Cruise described a habit of learning whatever a role or production asks of him. “When I’m interested in something, I want to learn it. I want to understand it,” he said. He talked about keeping distractions at a distance so he can stay focused during a shoot, and he said he wants to pass on the fundamentals of filmmaking to younger performers coming up around him.

He pushed back on the notion that his sets run on chance. Cruise said his productions are built on preparation and clear planning that he shares with collaborators before the cameras roll. “I’m very open. It’s not like we don’t have a plan. We have scripts, we have plans, we’re going through it,” he said, describing a process he lays out for co-stars at the start of a job.

Cruise ended on an optimistic note about the state of the business. He said he believes the theatrical market is recovering and that he remains hopeful about where the industry is heading, a message consistent with the public role he has taken as an advocate for the cinema. “I’m very excited about where movies are,” he said.
