Mary Beth Barone was going for impact when she stepped onstage for the live taping of her Netflix comedy special, Galaxy Brain. Her lilac Wiederhoeft gown read as a celebration of high-femme glamour: a corseted waist, a translucent skirt slit to the hip, and strands of rhinestones cascading to the knee.
In a nod to the 35-year-old comedian’s star sign, designer Jackson Wiederhoeft even stitched a Gemini constellation into the bodice.
Speaking from her New York apartment with her rescue dog Pinky in her lap, Barone says the look began with a very specific reference — “the dress that Ariel wears when she decides to choose a man over her family,” from The Little Mermaid. As it came to life, she adds in her signature deadpan, “there was a bit of Megara from Hercules as well.”
The result matched the special itself: playful, precise and unapologetically feminine — a statement of intent from a comedian stepping into her biggest spotlight yet.
